A nerve conduction velocity test — also called a nerve conduction study (NCS) — measures how fast an electrical impulse moves through your nerve. NCV can identify nerve damage.

Nerve conduction studies may also be in done case of symptoms, such as numbness, tingling, and continuous pain and weakness.

Is it safe - Yes

The voltage of the electrical pulses used during an NCV is considered very low.

Do I need to come fasting? - No

Food and medications:
- Avoid anything with caffeine on the day of the test because it can affect the test results.
- Take your usual medications unless instructed otherwise.

Wash your hair the night before or the day of the test, don't use conditioners, hair creams, sprays or styling gels.

An EEG typically takes up to 60 minutes

In some cases, the test can be longer.

Video is routinely recorded during the EEG.Your body motions are captured by a video camera while the EEG records your brain waves. This combined recording can help your doctor diagnose and treat your condition.

Visual evoked potentials(VEP) test: This test can diagnose problems with the optic nerves that affect sight. A healthcare professional places electrodes along your scalp to record the electrical signals as you watch a checkerboard pattern flash for several minutes on a screen.
Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) test: This test can diagnose hearing ability and can point to possible brainstem tumors or multiple sclerosis. A healthcare professional places electrodes on your scalp and earlobes and delivers auditory stimuli, such as clicking noises and tones, to one ear.
Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) test: This test can detect problems with the spinal cord that cause numbness of the arms and legs. For this test, a healthcare professional attaches electrodes to your wrist, the back of your knee, or other locations. He or she will apply a mild electrical stimulus through the electrodes. Electrodes on your scalp then determine the amount of time it takes for the current to travel along the nerves to the brain.

The sensory evoked potential studies are considered safe procedures. The tests can cause a little discomfort.
